Hi Dr. Steve Knighton here from Glen Abbey Physiotherapy here in Oakville. Thank you for joining us again for another healthy living tip from our Live Pain Free series. One of the easiest things to do to help with your back pain is to adjust your sleeping positions.
Today we are going to be speaking about how to sleep better. Today we are going to discuss sleeping positions. There are 2 major sleeping positions we would like to deal with here.
– The first sleeping position is laying on your back with a pillow supporting your neck and another pillow for support under your knees. Lifting your legs up maintaining the curve of your back.
– The second sleeping position which many patients find even more beneficial is lying on your side. Place a pillow between your knees to keep a proper distance between your legs and again helping to maintain the natural curvature of your spine and your hip. This helps release lower back pain and is great for long periods of sleep.
One thing I don’t like to see people do when they sleep is when they bring their arm up above the head position. This can cause some shoulder issues, so it’s best to drop the arm down to below the head. This will help maintain good shoulder posture.
So what we are recommending here is when you are lying on your back make sure you keep a pillow under your knees maybe a little bit towards your bum. If you are lying on your side you should keep a pillow between your knees and keep your arms down with your hands below your head. Hopefully these tips have taught you how to sleep better tonight.
